Foods To Avoid With Acid Reflux

From the perspective of Oriental wisdom, foods to avoid with acid reflux are not as simple as saying "eat this" and "don't eat that."

You need to consider both:

  • Foods (and behaviors) that irritate your symptoms once you already have acid reflux, and...
  • Foods that actually cause you to develop the condition of acid reflux in the first place

Those are not exactly the same thing. Surprised? Well...

Here's the difference...

Foods that irritate your symptoms are believed to...

  • Relax your esophageal sphincter and allow more acid to reflux, or...
  • Cause your stomach to produce more acid (as milk and beer do)

So you should probably avoid them once you've developed acid reflux. But...

...foods that cause you to develop acid reflux in the first place are a different story.

Even though western medicine says the actual cause of acid reflux is unknown, Oriental medicine has observed for thousands of years that improper foods and eating habits, over a long term, will damage your digestive system, causing acid reflux to develop.

Then, once you've developed the acid reflux, other foods may be more likely to irritate your problem. Pretty sneaky, eh?

***Important - the bottom line is... you must eliminate those foods that caused the problem in the first place and follow the correct dietary habits. Otherwise, you just continue to cause your acid reflux condition, and will never get over it. Understand?

Take a look at the diet for acid reflux based on Oriental medicine principles for a better idea of how get over your acid reflux, not just decrease the symptoms.

Anyway, to stop irritating your acid reflux once you've already developed it, lets start with...

Foods to avoid with acid reflux ...

...once you've already developed acid reflux.

Bear in mind that researchers from the Stanford University concluded that eliminating acidic foods doesn't reduce symptoms of acid reflux. They say that eating less and elevatng your head while sleeping are the only behavior changes that reduce these symptoms.

Understand that, when they say that, they are only considering foods that increase your acid reflux symptoms... not long-term dietary changes that cause you to develop acid reflux in the first place as I described above.

With that in mind, here's the conventional recommendations for foods to avoid with acid reflux once you already have the problem...

  • Acidic foods and drinks
  • Alcohol
  • Beer, wine and soda (beer is the worst)
  • Caffeinated soft drinks
  • Chewing gum and hard candy
  • Chicken, beef, milk, or cream-based soups (too much fat)
  • Chocolate
  • Citrus fruits and juices (especially grapefruit, orange, pineapple, tomato)
  • Coffee (regular and decaffeinated)
  • Cold cuts, sausage, bacon, fatty all animal or vegetable oils
  • Creamed foods or soups
  • Fast foods (usually too much fat)
  • Fatty and fried foods
  • Fatty meat, chicken fat/skin
  • Garlic
  • Milk
  • Oils (animal and vegetable)
  • Onions
  • Peppermint and spearmint
  • Peppers
  • Smoking
  • Sodas
  • Spicy foods
  • Tea
  • Tomato-based foods, like spaghetti sauce, chili, and pizza
  • smoking
  • Tomatoes and tomato sauces

Those are the most well-known foods to avoid with acid reflux.

But, again, to get over acid reflux once and for all, you must not only avoid these foods that irritate your problem...

...you must eliminate those foods (and other dietary habits) that caused the problem in the first place. Otherwise, you just continue to cause your acid reflux condition, and you'll never get over it.
